Who Gets to Tell the Story of Life After 50?
The culture around aging is changing. And women themselves are changing it.
We are living, working, creating, leading, starting over, building things, leaving things, questioning things and figuring out what comes next.
Yet so much of the cultural conversation about women and aging is still about what we lose — youth, relevance, beauty, opportunity.
The Visibility Project wants to help tell a different story.
Not by replacing one narrow version of life after 50 with another, but by making room for more of the stories that are already here.
We want to see these women. We want to hear from them. We want their faces, ideas, work, experiences, contradictions and stories to be part of the culture around us.
Because the narrative about women and aging is changing.
And women themselves are the ones changing it.
The Visual Narrative
Each woman collaborates with photographer and project creator Kim Conant to create a visual narrative that reflects something real about who she is and the life she is living now.
The portraits may be quiet, bold, joyful, unexpected, polished or imperfect. The goal isn't to create one image of what a woman over 50 looks like.
It's to show how many different ways there are to be one.
The Story
The portrait is only part of the story.
Each woman is also interviewed about her life, experiences and perspective — what she's building, changing, questioning, carrying, enjoying or figuring out now.
There is no required reinvention. No extraordinary résumé. No inspirational ending.
We want to hear about women's lives as they actually are.
At the center of each conversation is one question:
What does being visible mean to you now?
The participant decides what she wants to share.
Project OverviewThe First Edition
The first edition of The Visibility Project is now underway.
Approximately six women over 50 will be photographed and interviewed during fall 2026. Their portraits and stories will become an ongoing online editorial series and will culminate in an intimate gathering and exhibition in Cambridge this December.
The evening will bring the project off the screen and into the room — with the portraits, the women behind them, and a conversation about visibility, aging and the stories we tell about women's lives.
This is the first edition of what we hope will become a growing visual and editorial archive of what life after 50 actually looks like.

This isn't just an exhibition. It's a chance to meet the women behind the portraits, hear from them in their own words, and be part of the conversation The Visibility Project was created to start.
